Gabon

This section contains a brief description of the legal system of Gabon.

Gabon became independent from France on 17 August 1960. In March 1968 Gabon became a one-party state. A multi-party constitution was adopted in 1991.

President Omar Bongo was President of Gabon for 42 years from 1967, and after his death in June 2009, his son Ali Bongo was elected to succeed him in August 2009.

Gabon has a mixed legal system of French civil law and customary law.

Gabon has a constitution dating from 1991.
