Nigeria

Nigeria gained independence from Britain on 1 October 1960. Nigeria ended military rule and commenced civilian government in 1999.

Nigeria has a mixed legal system of English common law, Islamic law (in 12 northern states), and traditional law.

Nigeria has a constitution dating from 1999 which has provisions providing that no person shall be subject to torture or inhuman or degrading treatement and that any person arrested or detained must be brought before a court of law within a reasonable time.
