This section contains a brief description of the criminal justice system of Algerua and contains research and documents relevant to pre-trial justice in Algeria.

Algeria became independent of France on 5 July 1952. Algeria instituted multi-party democracy in 1988, but fears of religious extremism lead to militrary intervention. In 2010, in response to protest, the government lifted emergency laws which had been in place for 19 years.

Parliamentary elections in May 2012 and municipal and provincial elections in November 2012 saw continued dominance by the National Liberal Front (FLN), with Islamist opposition parties performing poorly. Parliament is expected to revise the constitution in the near future.

Algeria has a mixed legal system of French civil law and Islamic law.

Some of the legislation of Algeria, including the Penal Code, is published by the Ministry of Justice here, in French.
