A5I Domestic Implementation Package launch meetings in Cape Town and Bujumbura

The purpose of the third workshop was to launch the final version of the DIPs in all A5I target countries. This took place on 13-14 November 2013 in Cape Town, South Africa and 20-21 November 2013 in Bujumbura, Burundi.

In both countries, the DIP tool served as a basis for discussion around developing a national plan of action on the prevention and combating of torture and other ill treatment. Both draft plans of action were widely distributed amongst relevant stakeholders.

In addition, in Burundi, the A5I staff provided training to the Burundian NHRI (the Commission Nationale Indépendante des Droits de l'Homme) on the DIPs, and worked at developing the national plan of action.

A5I also facilitated a visit to the Central Mpimba prison in Bujumbura, in order for participants to assess conditions of detention first hand and to understand which situations could lead to instances torture and other ill-treatment.
